Star Wars fans got a real treat during the Superbowl today: Our first look at May’s Solo: A Star Wars Story!!
I have to admit when I first heard the announcement for this movie, and even all the way up until recently (um, well, almost all the way up until this trailer dropped, to be completely honest), I was was not super excited for this movie. I know there are tons of Han Solo devotes out there who have been rooting for this film since the rumors of it began, but even though I do have a soft spot in my heart for the galaxy’s biggest “smuggler with a heart of gold”, he’s not my overall favorite character ever, and a whole anthology film about him seemed a bit out of place to me.
And when the film seemed destined to pile up in-production issues at the same rate a stormtrooper is likely to miss his target, my hopes for it continued to spiral downwards. Star Wars has never had a film that actually flopped. But I was fearful of what Solo might do to that record.
However, recent rumors about the possible connections this movie may have to things first seen in the Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated series made me begin to question my hasty appraisal of it, and this teaser trailer has finally cemented my position into place: I’m gonna give this thing a chance. That teaser’s feel had a very strong reminiscence to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, the film to begin the run of the Star Wars anthology movies (set outside of the core Skywalker family saga, but still contributing to it), and I absolutely loved Rogue One. This teaser really looks great, and I can’t wait to see tomorrow’s full trailer.
Solo: A Star Wars Story will hit theaters May 25th, 2018, and will be starring Alden Ehrenreich as Han Solo, Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian, and Joonas Suotamo as Chewbacca. Also starring will be Emilia Clarke (known for her role in Game of Thrones) and Woody Harrelson (Haymitch Abernathy from The Hunger Games series). Solo is directed by Ron Howard and written by Jon and Lawrence Kasdan, and the story is based on characters originally created by George Lucas.
