Art Apprentice: Interview with Teenaged Fanartist, Grace

Here at The Elven Padawan, we like to keep an eye out for young fangirls and fanboys doing great things in the community, and when we find them, get their work out for the rest of the fandom to see. As I was scrolling through Twitter recently, I happened to see some amazing fanart from Grace, a teenaged fan of Star Wars and Star Wars Rebels.

I contacted her dad immediately, and set up an interview with her to feature here on The Elven Padawan!! So please welcome this amazing artist, and check out her work and what she has to say about Star Wars.

Shay: Introduce yourself! Name, age, favorite color, favorite things, hobbies, anything you’d like to share! Pick 5 adjectives that you think fit you and your personality and list them.

Grace: I’m Grace, I am 14 years old, my favorite color is rose-gold, my favorite things are Star Wars, art, and photography. My hobbies are art and photography. 5 adjectives that fit me and my personality are: I’m meticulous, creative, crazy, decisive, and geeky (specifically towards Star Wars.) I have never had art lessons. I am self-taught.

How long have you been a Star Wars fan? How did you first come to love it?

I’ve been a Star Wars fan since I was really little. I was watching A New Hope by 1 1/2 so I’ve really just always loved it.

How long have you been into art? Has art helped you in any way as you’ve grown up, or played a significant part in your life?
2015 was when I was really getting into painting and trying realism and animated characters.

About a year ago I was going through extreme stress over school and it just wasn’t going very well. So I would just start drawing to ease my stress and it would just make me really happy and calm. So I guess art helped me through that hard time.

Which is your favorite Star Wars film? Do you have a preference for your favorite Star Wars media: films or animated shows?

My favorite film is definitely The Last Jedi.

I love both the animated shows and the films so much! But if I had to pick one, I would say probably the films.

Who is your favorite character from all of Star Wars (including all films, shows, etc.)?

Definitely Sabine Wren.

Do you have a favorite character to make art of? (This can include cosplay!) Do you have a favorite piece of Star Wars-inspired art you’ve made?

I’ve always liked drawing Kylo Ren and Ezra Bridger

My first and only cosplay I’ve done is TLJ Rey

Do you have a favorite Star Wars experience that you’d like to share? Has Star Wars-inspired art in particular caused anything neat to happen to you?

I, my Dad, and my Brother went to Star Wars Celebration Orlando last year and met Dave Filoni!

We have contacted Acme Archives in the past year to see if we could make copies and sell my SW art through them, and the group of people that determine what art to accept into their company had a meeting specifically about my art. Even though I didn’t get accepted, I thought it was pretty cool that they had a specific meeting about my art.

And a year later, at an art festival, there was a guy who heard my name at the Acme Archives booth and remembered me because he was in that meeting about my art.

Is there any way that Star Wars has helped you as you’ve grown up? Is there a unique view or perspective you have on it because of your age that you’d like to share?

Sabine has been an example/inspiration for me because she was a young character in Star Wars and she was fighting against this huge Empire at such a young age, and that just encouraged me because I wanted to be more like her. Skilled at a young age and fearless. And as we got to find out in later seasons, she is vulnerable and she has a weakness like all of us.

Are there any lessons Star Wars and any of its characters or stories helped you learn and exercise in the “real world” as you’ve grown up, or a particular story/character you relate to personally in your own life? Is there a particular lesson from it that you think more people in the world, especially the young fans, should notice?

Star Wars has taught me that there’s always hope. Even when it seems no one is listening or there for you, there’s always someone somewhere that is there for you and understands what you’re going through. And I think younger fans should notice this because I think we all feel at some point that there’s no hope, but there’s always hope.

If you could be part of any affiliation in Star Wars (Jedi, Sith, Rebellion, Empire, First Order, Resistance, Smuggler, Old Republic Senator, Bounty Hunter, New Republic, anything!), what would you choose?

Either Jedi or a Mandalorian.

Thanks so much to Grace for sharing her thoughts with The Elven Padawan!! Are any of you readers artists as well? Do you have favorite characters you like to represent in your art? Would you like to see more interviews with fellow Padawans in the future? Let us know in the comments!!
